Question:
An error message is occuring that says, "450 Relaying
denied, please see http://support.cws.net/ptr.html and
have your ISP fix the PTR record for xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" when you try to send e-mail through
CWS's mail servers. My email used to work!
Answer:
CWS takes careful steps to help eliminate the abuse
of mail servers. One of the ways we do this is to make sure the address you're
coming from has a name. For instance, your Internet address may be
204.186.60.101, but it should also have a name such as hostxx-xx.dsl.aol.com.
From time to time ISPs (the people who provide
DSL, cable, and dialup Internet access to you) forget to give a name to a
specific address. This name is the PTR record. If we don't see a name (hence
no PTR record), we can't relay any outgoing mail for you. This protects
both you (the sender) and CWS from looking like a potential spammer.
The solution to this problem is to obtain a new IP
address (that is correctly configured). Don't worry, it's not that difficult!
If you have a dialup modem, disconnect and reconnect to the Internet.
If you have a DSL or cable modem, turn it off for 10 seconds, and then turn
it on again.
If you continue to get the "PTR record" error
message, please contact us for additional support.
Additionally, you should complain to your ISP so that
they can correct the problem with their reverse DNS configuration. You may
look up the party responsible for your IP by going to
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address given in the error
message you received).
