Setting up your dialup networking - Windows NT 4

Setting up your dial-up networking is easy. We've created these step-by-step instructions to make it even easier.

To correctly set up your dial-up networking in Windows NT 4, follow the steps below:

STEP 1

Double click on My Computer

STEP 2

Double click on Dial-Up Networking

STEP 3

If you receive a message stating that The phonebook is empty..., then click OK to add a new entry.

STEP 4

If Dial-up Networking (DUN) already has other phone book entries, click New.

STEP 5

If the New Phonebook Entry Wizard window appears, check the box labeled I know all about phonebook entries... and click Finish.

STEP 6

In the New Phonebook Entry dialog, select the Basic tab.

STEP 7

Check Use Telephony dialing properties.

STEP 8


Uncheck
Use another port if busy.

STEP 9

For Entry name, enter CWS Internet

STEP 10

Enter the country code and area code of the number you are dialing, plus the phone number itself.

STEP 11

Under Dial using, select your modem.

STEP 12

Click the Configure button.

STEP 13

Set the Initial speed (BPS) to 19,200 if you have a 14.4k modem or 38,400 if you have a 28.8k modem.

Make sure all three Hardware Features boxes are checked (if applicable) and that Disable modem speaker is unchecked.

STEP 15

Click the OK button.

STEP 16

Select the Server tab.

STEP 17

The Dial-up server type should be PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet.

STEP 18

For Network Protocols only TCP/IP should be checked.

STEP 19

Make sure Enable software compression is checked, but Enable PPP LCP extensions is unchecked.

STEP 20

Click the TCP/IP settings button.

STEP 21

Select Server assigned IP address and Specify name server addresses.

STEP 22

In the Primary DNS text box, type 63.85.211.15

STEP 23

In the Secondary DNS text box, type 63.85.211.20

STEP 24

Leave the Primary WINS and Secondary WINS servers at 0.0.0.0

STEP 25

Check both Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network.

STEP 26

Click the OK button.

STEP 27


Select the Script tab.

STEP 28

Make sure None is selected.

STEP 29

Select the Security tab.

STEP 30

Select Accept any authentication including clear text.


STEP 31

Click OK.

STEP 32

You will now be in the Dial-up Networking program, and the phone book entry you just created should be selected in the Phonebook entry to dial text box.

Click the Dial button.

STEP 34

A window will appear asking for a username, password, and domain. The first two are required.

STEP 35

Do not enter anything for the Domain.

STEP 36

There is also an option to Save Password, which can be selected if desired.

STEP 37

Click OK to dial into the Internet.

STEP 38

Once you are connected, a window will appear informing you that you have successfully connected to the Dial-up Server. Click OK to close this window.

STEP 39

You are now connected and may use any internet software such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

Helpful hint:

You may want to place a shortcut to your dialup connection on your desktop to make connecting to the Internet easier. To do this, follow the directions below:

  • Right click the CWS Internet icon.
  • Choose Create Shortcut.
  • A shortcut will appear. Simply click and drag it to your desktop.
