Setting up your dialup networking - Windows 98

Setting up your dial-up networking is easy. We've created these step-by-step instructions to make it even easier.

To correctly set up your dial-up networking in Win95, follow the steps below:

STEP 1

Double click on My Computer

STEP 2

Double click on Dial-Up Networking

STEP 3

Double click on Make New Connection

STEP 4

Under Type a name for the computer you are dialing, type CWS Internet

STEP 5

Click the Configure button

STEP 6

Check that the appropriate speed for your modem is selected (for 14.4 modems use 19200, for 28.8 modems use 38400 and for 33.6 and 56K modems, use 57600.)

STEP 7

Make sure that Only connect at this speed is not checked.

STEP 8

Click the OK button.

STEP 9

Click the Next button

STEP 10

In the Area code and Telephone number text boxes, type your local CWS Internet access number. Remember to check with your local telephone company to make sure that the number you choose is a local toll-free call.

STEP 11

Click the Next button.

Step 12

Click the Finish button.

STEP 13

Click the CWS Internet icon.

STEP 14

From the menu bar, click File and select Properties.

STEP 15

Click the Server Type button.

STEP 16

For Type of Dial-Up Server, select PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 4, Internet.

STEP 17

Uncheck Log on to network.

STEP 18

Check Enable software compression.

STEP 19

Uncheck Require encrypted password.

STEP 20

Uncheck NetBEUI.

STEP 21

Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible.

STEP 22

Check TCP/IP.

STEP 23

Click the TCP/IP Settings button.

STEP 24

Select the Server assigned IP address button.

STEP 25

Select the Specify name server addresses button.

STEP 26

In the Primary DNS text box, type 63.85.211.15

STEP 27

In the Secondary DNS text box, type 63.85.211.20

STEP 28

Check both Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network.

STEP 29

Click the OK button.

STEP 30

Click the OK button.

STEP 31

Click the OK button.

STEP 32

Click the OK button to close the window.

Congratulations! You have successfully set up your dialup Internet connection!

Helpful hint:

You may want to place a shortcut to your dialup connection on your desktop to make connecting to the Internet easier. To do this, follow the directions below:

  • Right click the CWS Internet icon.
  • Choose Create Shortcut.
  • A shortcut will appear. Simply click and drag it to your desktop.
